A series of flash floods and landslides struck mountain areas along the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region in recent hours, causing deaths, missing persons and heavy damage to roads, bridges and hydropower projects. Authorities describe “devastation everywhere” and fear the death toll may rise in the coming hours.
According to reports from the affected areas, the official death toll is at least nine people so far, but local authorities and witnesses warn there is a high likelihood the number will increase once isolated areas can be reached and inspected. Television footage and local video show houses shattered by the water, cars swept away by the current and a metal bridge carried off by the floodwaters.
The floods appear to have had widespread impacts on both sides of the border. In Nepal, the hardest-hit settlements are Syapru Besi and Timure, in the mountainous Rasuwa district, which has a population of about 50,000. Witnesses say entire villages along the Bhote Koshi river were overwhelmed; local health workers report homes completely gone and relatives still unlocated.
On the Chinese side, in Gyirong county — which hosts a commercial and tourist border crossing — a landslide struck the port area, cutting roads, communications and power lines in the Shigatse region. Chinese authorities have expressed concern about “serious human losses” and reported people missing after the event. The central government has called for “all-out searches” and for strengthened monitoring and early-warning systems to prevent secondary disasters.
A particularly worrying figure concerns tourists initially reported as missing: sources say 384 people were unlocated, including 291 from countries such as India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Malaysia. It is not yet clear how many of these were actually caught up in the worst-affected areas or are temporarily isolated because of disrupted links.
A direct link between the floods and specific environmental causes has not been conclusively established. Nepali authorities recalled that last year a similar flood on the Bhote Koshi was attributed to the sudden draining of an overlying supraglacial lake in Tibet; however, for the current event there are no official confirmations of a similar dynamic. Persistent weather conditions and the area’s geomorphological fragility make the situation more complex.
The impact on Nepal’s national power grid is already tangible: Kathmandu’s Ministry of Energy estimated that about 430 megawatts of hydropower generation have been affected, a share corresponding to more than 12% of the country’s total hydropower capacity, estimated at around 3.2 gigawatts. The loss of this energy could affect local supplies and water-management plans, as well as affect hydropower projects already operating or under construction along the rivers.
Rescue operations on the ground have been complicated by the inability of Nepali helicopters to land in the hardest-hit areas until water levels recede. Police and the armed forces have been mobilized alongside local rescuers, while Nepal’s prime minister ordered evacuations of people from lower-lying areas and urged residents along the river to “stay alert and exercise maximum caution.” Authorities have also deployed transport for the injured and support for affected families.
Official statements from China have expressed similar concern: President Xi Jinping has called for intensified search efforts and the strengthening of monitoring and early-warning systems to limit the risk of further natural disasters. Chinese official communications report that the landslide affecting the Gyirong crossing originated on the Nepalese side, but they did not provide additional details on causes or the exact number of people missing.
Beyond immediate relief operations, the disaster highlights broader issues related to the vulnerability of Himalayan areas: climate change, glacier retreat, the management of infrastructure in mountainous terrain and the resilience of hydropower facilities all complicate coexistence with extreme events. Last year the same valley saw the destruction of a “friendship bridge” between Nepal and China, leading to months-long disruption of trade and tourism.
Several aspects remain uncertain. The final number of missing tourists and residents has not been confirmed; the precise origin of the floods — whether due to a glacial detachment, extreme precipitation, or a combination of factors — is unknown; and the full extent of damage to key infrastructure, including hydropower construction sites, has yet to be determined. Initial estimates of lost generation capacity may also change as new information is verified.
In the short term, priorities remain locating the missing, assisting those affected and stabilizing at-risk infrastructure. In the medium and long term, the cross-border chain of events underscores the need for cooperative monitoring measures and joint emergency plans between Nepal and China for shared mountain basins. For now, however, villagers and valley communities are visibly distressed: many families are still searching for relatives and the devastation will take weeks, if not months, to quantify and rebuild.
