Nepali and Chinese authorities on Thursday issued a new warning about the risk of further flooding in Himalayan regions after a devastating surge swept through villages and fields along the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region. The event, which occurred in the Bhotekoshi valley and near Rasuwa district, has already produced a heavy toll: according to the government in Kathmandu, the death toll has risen to 389, while roughly 910 people are reported missing. Three deaths have been confirmed on the Tibetan side.

The alert followed satellite images showing the formation of temporary lakes upstream of the Bhotekoshi caused by natural blockages of the watercourse. Experts fear that the breach of these water pockets — a phenomenon typical in glaciated areas affected by landslides and unstable moraines — could trigger further cascading flood events downstream, worsening the damage already caused by the initial surge.

The tragedy has an international dimension: the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that, as of the reporting date, at least 288 Indian citizens were untraceable after the floods, while about 200 were believed to be stranded on the Chinese side of the border. A ministry spokesperson said New Delhi is in constant contact with Nepali and Chinese authorities to coordinate rescue efforts and verify the status of nationals involved.

As part of relief operations, the government of Uttar Pradesh announced a deployment to support rescue activities: a 32-member team from the State Disaster Response Force and 22 PAC officers were sent to the border areas on the state governor’s orders, according to an official statement. Monitoring of downstream rivers, in particular the Gandak and connected basins, has been intensified to prevent impacts on the northern Indian plains.

The crisis affects individual families as well: among those reported missing are Indian citizens resident in various states, including a group of elderly pilgrims whose departure for Nepal was temporarily suspended by the state of Rajasthan, and private citizens from Karnataka and Chhattisgarh. The Indian embassy in Kathmandu has also published emergency numbers for relatives and rescuers, urging the use of WhatsApp as a direct channel.

Images circulated in recent days show rescue teams at work retrieving people and providing aid: the Nepali army has intervened in force in the affected areas, with personnel rescuing children, the elderly and improvised refugees in camps. Reports say many villages have been cut off by falling debris and altered road routes; local bridges and infrastructure are severely damaged, complicating access to the most remote territories.

The immediate cause of the surges has been attributed to a combination of factors: accelerated glacier melt, moraine instability, heavy precipitation and the detachment of large masses of earth that blocked watercourses, creating temporary basins. Mountain-area specialists stress that such events are becoming more frequent and unpredictable in many ranges, making satellite monitoring and downstream sensors critically important.

Chinese authorities, in addition to confirming the deaths in the Tibet Autonomous Region, reported the possibility of further water releases from lakes forming on the Tibetan side. Beijing has deployed local teams for preventive evacuations and to assess the stability of natural dams; meanwhile, the flow of information between local administrations and international relief agencies has remained a determining factor in crisis management.

Non-governmental organisations and religious groups in India have already launched fund-raising and relief campaigns to support the populations affected in Nepal. The Vishva Hindu Parishad has started a public solidarity campaign, calling for contributions for immediate assistance; the mobilisation reflects both geographic proximity and the social and cultural ties that link many communities in northern and eastern India to Himalayan areas.

Diplomatically, the crisis has highlighted the need for cross-border coordination in managing hydrogeological risks: satellite data and early warnings proved decisive in prompting timely evacuations in some areas, but gaps remain in the ability to reach isolated populations quickly. Access to relief corridors has been hampered by infrastructure damage and by the difficulty of moving through mountain terrain that has undergone sudden changes.

Uncertainties remain. Numbers of dead and missing may vary in the coming hours as field verifications are completed and contact is re-established with isolated villages. Some reports regarding untraceable Indian nationals are being verified by embassies and local authorities; The Hindu has compiled and circulated the preliminary figures cited so far, but a single source for these updates requires caution in interpreting the final counts.
